GLC - Session 1
Session 1 – John Burke So I have been typing notes for posting this whole time and I just lost them errrrgggg. Ok so lets see if I can remember it all.
So we tried a new set up and split the chapel to make it smaller and put the screen in the middle of the room. Its pretty sweet. I would love to do this again and bring in more comfortable chairs for another conference.
The session started off with an awesome drama showing how hard it is to lead a small group but how awesome it is when it works. When people let down their guards and lives are changed. Love it. John Started off with a story about a transsexual living in confusion finding identity in Christ through his church community. He also told a similar story about a lesbian woman in a 12 year long relationship discovering that her identity is not that she is gay but a child a God. I forgot some of this stuff in the middle….hahaha.
60/60 plan: John shared about an experiment that he did to stop every 60 minutes for 60 days to stop and focus on God. 2,000 people in their small groups did this. I tried this for two days and failed misserably. It is so hard. I would love to try the 60/60 challenge if I could get some people to do it with me. Any takers?? Drop me an email if you are jwaronne@gmail.com.
Genesis:
- God immediately creates community for Man
Community is essential. We hate to be left outside the group, but when we are in we shut out other.
The Fall comes and destroys community
Galations 3:28
- Jesus’s comes to restore community and break down the walls. No more black and white, girl and boy, demacrat & republican, gay or straight. Our identity is not in our titles but in whos we are.
- We need to be extension of this. We need to bring fourth relational healing. We need to be in community and invite others in.

I thought this was a great talk... great stories, great content!
It was a great reminder that community/relationships are not a means to and end, but very much the end itself. We are created for community.
Also a great reminder that authentic community is really messy and that is OK. Sometimes I wonder if we don's allow too much "mess" at St. Paul's, but I think we are doing alright. In too many churches, people have to hide their mess and that destroys not just community, but also people's relationship with God...
