GLC - Session 3
Session 3 – Will Miller
“What stunts community growth”
Will’s Answer: The culture.
America leads the world in Stress related disorders. 46 Million Americans move and the year average is 45 million. The average American is watching 28 hours of television a week. Our culture has made us individualistic and self reliant. We are lied to being told we can be what we want to be. But we cant we are limited to our gifts, talents, etc. We need to come together to fulfill the gaps that we have in our lives.
Sorry got distracted texting responses to Will’s survey’s hahaha.
Refrigerator Rights: What a great concepts. How many people that you see on a regular basis have refrigerator rights in your home? Ie: can come in your home and go in your frig without having to ask. How many have bathroom rights? That number is definitely smaller.
Will’s talking about how self help books and speakers are all the same. Everyone has internal things that need to be unleashed and they can help you. Very internal focused. Most therapy is about fixing the external things around you that will shape the internal. The network around you is imperative to you becoming who you need to become.
Wow will just started doing stand up in the middle of his talk. That’s awesome.
I love the idea of having two cars. One you love and care for, and the other that you can trash and drive in tough situation.
Ok back at it….. Love is a noise cutting through the culture of individuality. Your love for someone trumps your passionate individualities that you have. It forces us to push through everything. Small groups fail because they are battling the culture and habits of staring at screens all day and individuality.
Disconnection from other people is the cause of our angst. The triage is immediate connection. Refrigerator rights.
This guy was great. Very challenging on how we are living our lives every day and the time that we spend with people. We/I need to spend none contingent time with people. Not related to project or purpose but simply connection. Even as i am typing this on my computer I am ignoring the opportunity to connect with people. Ironic insist it. What if community with God and Community with other was our primary goal in life? Could we really alleviate stress and psychological issues? Wouldn't hurt.

This was a great session. He was both profound and hysterical.
How do we create a culture of real community ("refrigerator rights") in the midst of our highly individualistic, transient and self-reliant culture?
I see people every day undercut community--not through sin or scandal, but through the simpler and more deceptive stuff of life. Whether it is the decisions people make about moving, where to live, or how to invest their time... I see it all the time.
So many see community in purely utilitarian ways and assume it can be developed anywhere. But community is not a means, but an end. And it is a rarer commodity that post people realize.
For me, when I find the real deal, I cling to it with everything I have... and invest whatever I can in it. That is one reason I have been in Storrs for so long now and one reason I hope St. Paul's is my last job... we are experiencing real community and that is too valuable to give up.
