text:_ Proverbs 2:1-6 Reflections

Proverbs 2:1-6

1 My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you,

2 turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding,

3 and if you call out for insight
and cry aloud for understanding,

4 and if you look for it as for silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure,

5 then you will understand the fear of the LORD
and find the knowledge of God.

6 For the LORD gives wisdom,
and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

The relationship between wisdom and a “fear of the Lord” is interesting to me.

If you accept, store up, cry aloud for, look for, and search for wisdom in God’s Word, then God promises that you will understand the fear of the Lord. Wisdom is a free gift from God, but that wisdom starts with the “fear of the Lord.” (Psalm 111:10).

It makes sense to me that having true knowledge and understanding must begin with having an accurate perception of who God is, His awesomeness and severity, as well as His worthiness of our thoughts and adoration.

But how can we know how deserving of our reverence He is unless we are searching the Scriptures? For this is the very place that God reveals Himself to us to us. And once we understand who we are in light of who He is, everything becomes much more clear.

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding.” Psalm 111:10
