Advent Reading Reflections (12/10)
MALACHI 2:17
You have wearied the LORD with your words.
"How have we wearied him?" you ask.
By saying, "All who do evil are good in the eyes of the LORD, and he is pleased with them" or "Where is the God of justice?"
MALACHI 3:1
"See, I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come," says the LORD Almighty.
Two central themes of the scriptures juxtaposed against each other: our faithlessness, God's faithfulness.
The great danger for us is not that we sin. We all sin. Our sins are really symptoms of the great problem of SIN in the world. But the real danger is when we start calling THAT WHICH IS SIN, NOT SIN. That was the danger in Malachi's generation and it is the danger for the church and God's people in our generation too.
And yet, in God's goodness, he sends messengers of hope and Good News and ultimately sends his Son, who becomes SIN to free us from sins. When we deny our sins -- and worse, deny SIN -- we deny the death and resurrection of Christ.
Come, Lord Jesus!
