The Power of a Clarifying Question
I have been learning the POWER OF A CLARIFYING QUESTION these last few weeks.
Here is what I mean...
Sometimes ideas can be slippery and hard to pin down. For example, we all know that GOSSIP is bad, destructive and to be avoided. But what actually counts as gossip? Is processing something with a friend or pastor gossip? What about a prayer request? We can get so worked up looking at all the angles that we take something that is fairly simple and straightforward and make it complicated.
The answer?
A CLARIFYING QUESTION.
For example, in our small groups we learned that "if you aren't part of the problem and you aren't part of the solution, it is gossip." This goes for you or those you talk to. That is pretty clear and it helps us zero in on the key issue. It brings ACTIONABLE CLARITY.
Another example... when and how should we confront someone? We need to check our motives, but aren't our motivations always mixed at best? How do we sort it all out?
ANOTHER CLARIFYING QUESTION: "Are you confronting someone to help them or hurt them?"
When I answer that question honestly, I know with clarity whether I am in the right place to move on or if I need to keep quiet.
WISDOM is often about identifying the CLARIFYING QUESTION.
What examples can you think of?
