Child Dedications
In Deuteronomy chapter 6, Moses impresses on God's people the importance of impressing the faith on our children. In fact, raising our children in the faith is core to what Christian community and church is all about. That is why I love celebrating Child Dedications.
We got to celebrate one today and it was very special. The parents were both in my 40 Days of Community small group and just started coming to St. Paul's at Christmas this year. Two weeks ago we got to baptize dad and mom reaffirmed her baptism -- all very cool!
When we dedicate a child at St. Paul's we ask both the parents and congregation to make a commitment. Here are those commitments:
PARENTAL COMMITMENT:
As parents, we promise to care for and raise our children in a God-honoring way so that when they are old enough, they will commit their lives to Jesus and become a follower of Him. We commit to do this by:
- Praying for our child daily.
- Teaching our child about Jesus and God’s eternal principles from the Bible.
- Faithfully attending church with our child.
- Modeling a Christ-like life at work, in the home, in our relationship and as parents.
CONGREGATIONAL COMMITMENT:
As the church, we promise to support, encourage and care for this child and family by:
- Praying for them faithfully.
- Being their spiritual family.
- Modeling through our collective lives what it means to be a Follower of Christ.
- Walking beside this family as this child grows in spiritual knowledge and understanding.
